In many ways O'Brien's, "Voyage to Alpha Centauri" comes closest to the Interstellar theme. It is probably my favorite novel of his--which I've read twice. I recently read "Cloud Cuckoo Land" by Anthony Doerr. It is an excellent take on the theme of going into outer space seeking a utopia, or at least a refuge from the dying earth--though in this case with a twist that brings the whole narrative type into question. It is worth reading, I think, if one hasn't.
And I will add to the Interstellar admiration here by mentioning the transcendent score by Hans Zimmer. I don't think it would be the same movie without it, or if someone had done the standard Wagner/Mahler space opera soundtrack. But yes, one of my favorite movies.
I look forward to Adeodatus, whenever it comes out.
Happily, we just found "Cloud Cuckoo Land” in a local book box, so it has been added to my freight-train list of books “to read”. And yes, the film score for Interstellar really does it. Carries a quarter of the emotional weight of the film, at least.

Interstellar is remarkably re-watchable. A rarity in modern/popular film!
